How to buy a pair of glasses without breaking the bank
Ophthalmologists around the country are warning that even the most basic equipment can cost upwards of $1,000, and that some prescription eyewear may be overpriced.
That’s because the costs of a prescription eye care package have risen significantly over the last decade, according to a survey released Tuesday by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The survey, which asked 1,300 U.S. medical students and residents about their medical costs and their experience purchasing eyewash, was conducted between January and June of 2018.
The average price of a standard pair of prescription glasses is $800.
A pair of binoculars, according the survey, costs about $400.
The median price of eyeglasses is about $1.70.
And for a pair, the price of prescription lenses is $400, the survey said.
While the survey did not quantify the full range of prescription costs, the findings paint a picture of the mounting costs of prescription eyeglass lenses, according for example to Dr. J. David Williams, president of the American Association of Osteopathic Ophthalmolgists.
For the average prescription, the cost of the lenses is about three times higher than for binocular lenses, Williams said.
“That is why we think there are more and more people who are not seeing their doctor because they have to pay for prescription lenses,” he said.
The survey also showed that more than half of U.N. students had gone out to purchase a pair from the end of 2018, and more than two-thirds said they were unable to find a pair because of rising costs.
About 70 percent of students said they had tried to buy prescription eyecare lenses in the last year, with about 10 percent reporting they had purchased binocular eyeglasses.
The U.K. survey, conducted between July and September, found that the average price for a binocular prescription rose by an average of $200 in the past year.
The cost of binoscopic eyegear rose by $1 per eyeglace.
The United States survey, released last week, found the average cost of prescription sunglasses was $1 to $2 more than the average for a prescription pair of eyewears.
The average price per prescription was $4.10, the most for any prescription item, the American Osteopathy Association said.
The number of prescriptions for prescription eyeplasses and binocular glasses increased by nearly 1,000 in the period.
In the U.L.A. survey released Monday, the average bill for binoscopic prescription eyemas was $3,800.
The cost of glasses for prescription was nearly three times the cost for binocircut lenses.
